Week #2 – September 12th – 16th

Friday, September 16th

Objective:  I will develop a chart with my qualitative and quantitative observations and my questions from those observations.

SUMMARY OF TODAY: We were in our science notebook on page 14 and 15.  The title is “Observations and Questions.”

If you missed today: Go outside somewhere for 30 minutes.  You can wander or stay in one place.  Write down your observations that you can observe with your senses (qualitative observations) and observations that you have to measure (say with a ruler or counting).  A list of possible observations includes:

1) The bird sang three times in the last minute 2) The ground feels damp 3) I see red eyes on the insect.  Etc.

When you are done with your observations, take five minutes and record questions you have about what you saw.  You do not have to answer the questions.  Show me your observations and questions in class for credit.

Thursday, September 15th

Objective:  I will differentiate between a dependent variable and an independent variable on the exit quiz.

SUMMARY OF TODAY: Today we worked on page 12 of the SNB.  The title is “Variables.” We took notes on the difference between independent and dependent variables, did some practice Sponge Bob problems, and took a quiz on the concepts.

If you missed today: Borrow someone’s SNB and copy the notes down.  Collect one of the green Sponge Bob sheets from me and fill in the answers with *s on the side.  Show me your answers when you are in class.

Wednesday, September 14th

Objective:  With my team, we will develop working definitions for the scientific method vocabulary and a personal example.

SUMMARY OF TODAY: 1) We connected yesterday’s paper challenge to the steps of the scientific method.

2) We used the scientific method to determine what was inside a sealed box.

3) We went over homework – SEE THE HOMEWORK PAGE.

If you missed today: Borrow a science notebook from a classmate and copy the notes from today into your notebook.  We worked on page 9-11 of the notebook.

Tuesday, September 13

Objective:  I will create a T-chart demonstrating what I learned during the Paper Challenge.

SUMMARY OF TODAY: We created paper structures capable of holding a text book 8 cm off the table.  The only supplies allowed were one sheet of notebook paper and a little tape.

If you missed today: Come by Mr. Jamsa’s room after school or during AG and work on building the paper structure on page 8 of your notebook.

Monday, September 12

Objective:  I will demonstrate my listening skills by properly setting up my science notebook.

SUMMARY OF TODAY: We started setting up our science notebooks including 1) the first six pages 2) numbering all of the pages & 3) placing our name obviously on the front with our period number.

If you missed today: When you come into Mr. Jamsa’s class, collect the notebook handouts.  Borrow a notebook from a classmate and set yours up.

Objective:  I will demonstrate my knowledge in a diagram of earth science collaboratively learned today.

SUMMARY OF TODAY:

A)     Poke-your-Brain Ice Breaker

B)     Students sharing knowledge about earth science followed by a mini-lecture by Mr. Jamsa.

C)     In teams, students complete the objective above.

IF YOU MISSED TODAY: Collect a Poke-your-Brain paper from Mr. Jamsa’s class.  Answer at least five of the questions as well as you can.  You DO NOT need to complete the name and fun fact columns.  Turn in next class.

The following video demonstrates how hard it can be at times to share a new “paradigm” or way to view something with someone who has a different perspective.  Its truth speaks for itself.  I have trouble viewing it at Mark Twain, so you might have to watch it at home.
