WHEN ARE FINAL GENIUS HOUR PROJECTS DUE? Before Christmas Break. For students that demonstrate learning, they will be free to continue past the deadline.
DO GENIUS HOUR PROJECTS QUALIFY TO GO TO SCIENCE FAIR? Some do, some do not. I am encouraging them to decide projects based on importance and passion, and not if it fits into the science fair mold. Students do not lose credit if the project does not qualify for science fair.
HOW WILL GENIUS HOUR PROJECTS BE ASSESSED? This is my first year with Genius Hour, but the plan is to grade them on DEMONSTRATED LEARNING. This can be demonstrated in their learning journals, in the product of what they produce, or in the way that they summarize their work (Power Point, video, etc). The project itself will be a stand-alone grade. Furthermore, if students demonstrate mastery of the three other science skills we are learning this semester, they can also receive credit for those standards because of their work.
WHEN WILL STUDENTS WORK ON GENIUS HOUR PROJECTS? They will be given one science period per week to work on the project. Many students have also chosen projects that will require them to work on them outside of class as well.
WHAT IF MY STUDENT DOES NOT CHOOSE A GENIUS HOUR PROJECT? There are currently four options of other projects for students who did not find their own great project.
