December 16 – 20

Monday through FridayFinal Chemistry Assessment

This week alone or with teams students are developing their final chemistry projects. In short, they are to summarize on a legal-sized piece of paper one of the three chemistry concepts we studied and then develop a model which will help 5th graders understand the concepts.

What to do if you missed class: Click on the Chemistry Final web link for instructions on how to do the assessment. If you have already decided your project, you can work alone on it at home or you can work with your team via social media and google. Projects are due Friday.

E-mail Mr. Jamsa if you have any questions.

December 9 – 13

Thursday, December 12 – Friday December 13th

What we did in class today: Mr. Jamsa was out of town. We watched the last part of Temple Grandin on one day and we were introduced to how to balance chemical equations on the second day.

What to do if you missed class: You don’t have to make up Temple Grandin. For balancing chemical formulas, look at the video below. Mr. Jamsa has practice worksheets you can take home and practice with if you ask.

Wednesday, December 11th

What we did in class today: We continued our studies of chemical reactions with Legos and then modeled with students as the atoms two famous chemical reactions – photosynthesis and respiration.

What to do if you missed class today: Not much you can do to make up the learning. Ask your group for help when working on the final exam next week.

——————————————————-

Tuesday, December 10th

What we did in class today: We used Legos as a model to learn about chemical formulas and reactions.

What to do if you missed class today: The picture below will give you a glimpse of what we worked on in class. See Mr. Jamsa for more details or ask your group questions during your work time next week.

What we did in class today: Today was the last day to work on the Santa Mystery lab in class.

What to do if you missed class today: You can write your CER at home for the lab. The outline is below:

C – The evidence supports the claim that ____ is the correct Santa cookie recipe.

E – List evidence from your chart ONLY. No other information should be here.

R – tie your evidence together with logic to MAKE YOUR CASE. Everything important enough to be listed under E should be explained with R. Which canister, A, B, or C, has the correct mixture of flour, baking soda, and powdered sugar?

December 2 – December 6

Tuesday, December 3 – Friday, December 6

What we did in class: We are assessing science skills with the Santa Mystery Lab. There are three major grades this week for the following skills 1) What did I do? 2) What happened? 3) What did I learn?

What to do if you missed class: If you are not here when we assess one or more of the skills, come see Mr. Jamsa for a way you can take a test at home to show the skill for the day you missed.

Monday, October 14

What we did in class today: We learned a strategy for finding a science fair project and we spent some time looking.

What to do if you missed class: The strategy is outlined below:

  1. Find a topic of interest with student passion page or by using websites found under SCIENCE FAIR link above. It is helpful to ask people who know you what ideas they have.
  2. Do some research on the topic/ see if you like it
  3. Brainstorm a list of independent and dependent variables about the project (as also described in the SCIENCE FAIR LINK) or choose a problem that can be solved related to the project.
  4. Talk to Mr. Jamsa or e-mail Mr. Jamsa your current idea. He will probably give you some suggestions for narrowing it down or he will ask you to consider other directions.
  5. Do more research
  6. Fill out the T-form and SHARE with Mr. Jamsa. The T-form is found in the Google classroom, not on this web site.
  7. Mr. Jamsa will accept the project or respond with ways you need to improve the project. We want it to be a) something you love b) do-able c) somewhat important. Mr. Jamsa has done this a long time and has a pretty good idea on what a good project looks like.
